Sediment baked onto the bottom. It wastes gas and cooks the steel from inside.

Less hot water than last winter means sediment or a failed lower element.

A damp ring at the base is not condensation. That is the tank telling you.

What decides whether it lasts is everything around it: venting that drafts, a gas line sized for the burner, a working T&P discharge.
